California Fuchsia

Epilobium canum

Epilobium canum, commonly known as California Fuchsia or Zauschneria, is a vibrant, low-maintenance perennial native to California and parts of the western United States. Known for its stunning display of tubular, scarlet-red flowers, this plant is a favorite among gardeners looking to attract hummingbirds and other pollinators to their landscapes.

Plant Characteristics

Growth Habit: Low-growing, mounding, or sprawling ground cover, typically reaching 1-2 feet in height and spreading 2-4 feet wide.

Foliage: Narrow, gray-green to silver leaves, adding subtle contrast to its bold flowers.

Flowers: Bright red, trumpet-shaped flowers bloom from late summer through fall, adding a pop of color when many other plants have finished blooming.

Hardiness Zones: USDA zones 8-10.

Drought Tolerance: Highly drought-tolerant once established.

Care and Maintenance

 Light Requirements

Thrives in full sun, where it produces the most vibrant blooms.

Can tolerate partial shade, but flowering may be reduced.

 Soil Preferences

Prefers well-draining soil with a sandy or rocky texture.

Avoid heavy, clay-rich soils that retain excess moisture, as this can lead to root rot.

 Watering Needs

Water deeply and infrequently, especially during the establishment phase.

Once established, supplemental watering is rarely needed, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping.

Pruning and Maintenance

Cut back to the base in late winter or early spring to encourage fresh growth and maintain a tidy appearance.

Deadhead spent flowers during the blooming season to prolong flowering. Fertilization

Requires little to no fertilizer. Excess nutrients may reduce blooming and cause overly lush foliage.

If desired, apply a light dose of a balanced, low-nitrogen fertilizer in spring.

 Pests and Diseases

Generally pest-free and resistant to most diseases.

Watch for aphids or spider mites, which can occasionally appear during dry spells.

 Wildlife and Companion Planting

Attracts hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies.

Pairs well with other drought-tolerant natives like Salvia, Artemisia, and Penstemon to create a vibrant, low-water landscape.

Epilobium canum is a standout choice for those seeking a resilient, eye-catching addition to their garden that thrives with minimal care. Its ability to bring life and color to a dry landscape makes it a must-have for native plant enthusiasts and pollinator-friendly gardens.
